if u use VrayMtlWrapper, and I assume that u have enabled: Matte sufrace, shadows, affect alpha, and u still have it black, then I assume u haven't assigned VrayMtl to Base material slot in the VrayMtlWrapper!
Just add a VrayMtl, make no changes on it and assign it as Base material where I mentioned. if u, for example, change the color of VrayMtl, that color will reflect on the objects that r put on that object that u set as wrapper.

*** Another way to do that (wrapper), is to use Vray Shadow Catcher button that u can find @ the bottom of the vray toolbar.

    good luck :)

Post the scene and I'll try it my way.
I doubt there would be a difference since it works for BlackHand who uses the same crack as you.
It doesn't hurt to try though.

Try using VraySun or maybe a VRay Plane, Disc, Sphere or Mesh light. If you use a Vray Dome light, it doesn't work

Vray 3.60.03, create a planem create a teapot, create one vray material default grey, apply to both teapot and plane, select the plane and click on the "Make Vray Shadow Catcher..... " icon in the Vray toolbar.

Add a Vray sun and Vray Physical Camera to the scene and render

    Rendered image

dome light environments are not supported with wrappermtl

Choas Group are apparently working on a solution...... watch this space

I think I found the issue with @dasnico 's scene. but this will only apply if @dasnico is using a dome light for lighting the scene.

Now, @dasnico , if u r using only a dome light, then here's the solution and it's very simple, but if u r not, then ignore this reply:

So in case u r using a dome light, and the plan with wrappermtl shows black, that's because the dome light is only "light" but there's nothing in the "environment" so that's y the wrapped plan won't show anything. and as we know by dafault, max's environment is black. and that's y the plan shows black!
in fact, if u clear the environment map and set the color to any other color, then the wrapped plan will show in that color u've set.

so the solution is to set and use a texture in the dome light (hdri map) and instance it to the environment slot. with that done, u'll have the result u r looking for. and u can even set the dome light to "invisible".

    and here's my test scene:

    1- with no environment map:

2- no environment map & environment color change
    [IMG]

    3- with environment map:

4- Alpha channel to make sure the shadows r working too:

Hopefully, this will solve ur problem :)

And right you are, BlackHand. I'll skip the images since yours cover it.

The problem is that "matte" material is checked in the VrayMtlWrapper.

A matte material by definition, uses the color of the background instead of its base material (except in reflections etc).
The background is black by default so you get black object renders.
So set the background to some color or to an environment map.

In the case of the dome light, set up a texture map for it, and then copy/paste it into the background environment map.
I guess in this case, the background is all-powerful.

I want to thank all of you for the time you all took to help me out. Especially Blackhand.

Blackhand, you were right and it works. This was definitely not the case with older Vray versions. I have been using Vray for a long time.

BUT I noticed something els. Within the Material Wrapper I have a normal Vray material. With older versions of Vray i used to give the diffuse the color of lets say the ground. So if the ground was brownish I would give the diffuse a brownish color. to simulate bounce light from the ground up. This doesn't seem to work now?

    Appreciate it.

U're welcome and I'm glad that we finally solved this issue (whew):)

as for the bounce from the ground up, yes it does work. and I mentioned that in my first reply and here I quote:

"Just add a VrayMtl, make no changes on it and assign it as Base material where I mentioned. if u, for example, change the color of VrayMtl, that color will reflect on the objects that r put on that object that u set as wrapper."

I think this is enough as an answer. but if u need, I'll upload a picture ;)
